Preparing for a Successful Retirement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – December 6, 2001

Jean R. Cleland, Director of Community Education and a case manager for the North Shore Senior Center in Northfield will be the guest this month on the cable access show Financial Solutions that airs in numerous northern Cook County and southern Lake County communities in Illinois. The topic of this month’s program is Preparing for a Successful Retirement.

Cleland has been with the North Shore Senior Center in Northfield for nearly 20 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and is a Licensed Social Worker (LSW). She maintains scheduled hours in a variety of north shore village halls and senior centers to meet with seniors and uses her experience to address their concerns and answer their questions. She is also a member of the Chicago Metropolitan Medicare Beneficiary Advisory committee and serves on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Housing Center.

The North Shore Senior Center was the first senior center in Illinois to be accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers. With a staff of over 80 senior service professionals, they service annually over 29,000 individuals and their families in 23 communities in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

The North Shore Senior Center was established in 1956 and services an area from the Evanston-Chicago border on the south into southern Lake County on the north. They also extend from the lake, west to O’Hare. Their mission is to support the independence and well being of older adults, enhance their dignity and self respect and promote their participation in all aspects of community life.

The purpose of this month’s program is to help our viewers prepare for an active and successful retirement. Rather than focus strictly on the financial aspects of retirement, it will also address the human side of the issue by considering a retiree’s health, their housing options and how they maintain a sense of purpose throughout retirement.

The show will air on Comcast cable once a week at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday’s for the entire month of January. The program reaches 105,000 subscribers on channel 35 in Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Des Plaines, Glenview, Golf, Hanover Park, Mt. Prospect, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Schaumburg, Skokie, Streamwood and Wheeling. The show will also be broadcast on Channel 19 at the same time to 120,000 subscribers in Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Wilmette.

Financial Solutions is produced and hosted by Patrick Doland, CFP™, a fee only financial planner and investment manager in Northbrook and is intended to help viewers address their questions on investments, retirement planning, education planning, insurance, and estate planning.
