Northhbrook Attorney Identifies Common Estate Planning Problems

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 28, 2001

Joseph C. Johnson, a Northbrook based attorney, will be the guest this month on the cable access show Financial Solutions that airs in numerous northern Cook County and southern Lake County communities in Illinois. The topic of this month’s program is Inherited IRA’s.

The Bush Administration is kicking off its effort for a proposed tax cut and everyone is wondering what parts of it will survive and what those survivors will look like once they have wended their way through Congress. With tax reform high on the radar screen, the IRS, with scarcely a stir, proffered a gift to everyone with IRAs and other retirement plans. In a move which some have heralded as “highly unusual”, the IRS introduced a true note of simplicity in the area of required distributions from IRAs and other retirement plans. Anyone who has tried to figure out the amount required to be withdrawn from, let’s say, an IRA, knows the multitude of decisions that need to be decided.

Johnson will address many of the questions that have confused so many of us, such as: When do you need to begin withdrawing money from an IRA? What happens if you don’t take out the required amount? What are the new rules and when are they effective.

After graduating from DePauw University, Johnson received his law degree from Wayne State University. He began his career in estate planning with a major bank in the Loop, followed by experience in a law firm. In 1975 opened his own law practice in his hometown of Northbrook.

Besides being a practitioner, Johnson has authoried numerous articles for various estate planning journals, has taught other attorneys on behalf of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education and is a member of numerous professional associations such as the American and Illinois Bar Associations and the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys.

The show will air on Comcast cable once a week at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday’s for the entire month of April. The program reaches 105,000 subscribers on channel 35 in Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Des Plaines, Glenview, Golf, Hanover Park, Mt. Prospect, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Schaumburg, Skokie, Streamwood and Wheeling. The show will also be broadcast on Channel 19 at the same time to 120,000 subscribers in Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Wilmette.

Financial Solutions is produced by Patrick Doland, CFP™, a fee only financial planner and investment manager in Northbrook and is intended to help viewers address their questions on investments, retirement planning, education planning, insurance, and estate planning.
